7 Tips For Creating the Perfect Rustic Wedding

Invite the outdoors in (or the indoors out) for a celebration that exudes rustic charm.

As told to Ashley Breeding

There’s something about an elegant affair—sleek gowns, sharply suited guests and gold-leaf crockery and linens—juxtaposed with rustic elements that casts an air of whimsy and warmth, even as autumn falls into winter.

If you’re equally swept away by a farm-to-soiree ambiance, Terrain Events talent can help you achieve it. Experts at creating lavish horticultural backdrops for special occasions year-round, they know “the devil is in every little detail,” says Brianna Alcorn, senior sales manager for events. From fresh seasonal fare and libations to bespoke floral accents, all selections are thoughtfully curated. Here, Alcorn shares seven tips for creating the “perfect rustic wedding.”

1. Set the scene

To set the tone, first choose a venue with a rustic motif—one with a natural “woodsy” feel to serve as the backdrop for your big day. Think warm wooden interiors, outdoor firepits, farmhouse tables and natural décor, like fresh greenery. (The earthy scent enhances the experience.)

2. Breaking tradition

If you’re a rustic-minded couple, chances are that a similar style of dress will fit you better than traditional wedding garb. For dresses, look for whimsical silhouettes, sans train, and details like lace and floral embroidery, which add a touch of rustic charm. When suiting up, consider navy or gray, and add personality with patterned socks, ties, bowties or pocket squares.

3. Garden-inspired libations

Another way to bring the outdoors into your celebration is with cocktails that incorporate natural elements, like edible flowers, herbs and fruits. These are not only delicious, but also evoke pastoral elegance.

4. Downhome details

Enhance the rustic vibe with personalized menu cards, locally sourced party favors and Weck jars, which can be used to hold flowers as well as drinks. It’s layering the little things that creates the overall look.

5. Family-style supper

For receptions that include seated meals, consider serving your guests family-style. This encourages sharing and togetherness, while also setting a tone that’s more casual than formal.

6. Go wild

Florals are a perfect way to bring your rustic vision into full bloom. From your bouquets to table settings, choose wildflowers that look as though they were freshly picked from a meadow.

7. Sparkling sendoff

Traditional fireworks make an impact but aren’t so good for the environment. (They’re not exactly safe in a setting filled with greenery, either.) Safer, more environmentally sound alternatives are signature sparklers, which are a fun way to enhance the evening by capping off the event and creating an amazing photo opportunity.
