What You Need to Know About Gluten-Free and Vegan Wedding Cakes

There are plenty of delicious options available to suit every sweet tooth.

In 2017, it’s realistic to assume that at least a few of your wedding guests will be vegan or have gluten allergies. Luckily, many local bakeries offer gluten-free and vegan-friendly wedding cakes and desserts. Some couples choose to purchase them in smaller sizes, as an addition to their regular wedding cake. Others may elect to tailor one tier of their regular cake to specific allergies or preferences.

Here’s where to find these tasty alternatives—and which flavors are most popular.

“In the beginning there weren’t as many gluten-free options, and in turn taste suffered,” says chef Dana Herbert of Desserts by Dana in Newark, Del. “Now, we can produce a gluten-free cake with great gluten-free ingredients that’s very close to traditional cake.” Vanilla, lemon, and creamsicle are all popular gluten-free flavors at Desserts by Dana, where vegan cakes are also available.

The Happy Mixer, a 100 percent gluten-free facility located in Chalfont, Pa., strives to recreate the classics better than anyone. “We pride ourselves on our products being so good that no one can tell they are gluten-free,” says owner Tim Mourer. Chocolate, vanilla and red velvet are among favorite cake flavors; various fillings and icings are available, too. If you don’t want to order an entire cake, vegan cupcakes (chocolate and vanilla) are also offered.

Sweet Freedom Bakery in Philadelphia—the city’s only completely vegan, gluten-free and allergy-friendly bakery—offers a wide range of options. Lemon and lemon-blueberry cake flavors are popular in the spring and summer, while pumpkin and eggnog flavors are in high demand during the colder months. “Everything we bake is free of gluten, corn, soy, dairy, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts (with the exception of coconut) and refined sugars,” says owner Jen Kremer. Plus, we are kosher and use no synthetic dyes.”

The Master’s Baker in West Chester, Pa., offers smaller gluten-free and vegan cakes, as well as cupcakes. Popular cake flavors include strawberry parfait and lemon-blueberry.

Depending on the bakery, a gluten-free cake may take a bigger bite out of your wedding budget than a regular cake. Gluten-free cakes tend to be more expensive due to the pricier flours and ingredients they contain. Vegan cakes, says Herbert of Desserts by Dana, don’t typically cost much more than regular cakes.
