The trend toward customization shows no signs of slowing down—and brides are getting more creative than ever when it comes to their accessories. Planner Alicia Fox of Delaware-based Fancy Fox Events shares how brides are pulling back the veil on the tradition.

According to Brides magazine, the history of wedding veils traces back to Rome. A bride would cover her face to ward off evil spirits that might steal her happiness on the Big Day. Later, the accessory became more of a symbolic representation of modesty, sentimentality and, of course, personal expression.

Nowadays, brides are embellishing their veils with everything from floral appliqués to textured beads. “It can just say their new last name. It can be a quote. It could be a Bible verse…or really whatever they want it to be,” Fox says.

One of Fox’s brides inscribed “Love”—also her last name—on her veil, along with a Kenyan shield as a nod to her husband’s native country and to honor both families.

Others add texture with 3D florals or subtle elements of color. Rhinestones can add depth while preserving the conventional monochromatic palette.

Some modern brides are forgoing the customary head covering altogether. Fox recalls one bride last season who instead wore pearls in her hair, while another attached a flowing mesh train to a sheer jacket.

Whether bold or understated is your thing, Fox suggests finding inspiration through independent artists and designers in online marketplaces like Etsy.
